STIGMATIZATION OF SINGLE PREGNANT WOMEN.
I always persive pregnancy as a blessing from God. A song from Sauti soul which states that " Every child comes with their own plate", in swahili it says "Kila mtoto huja na sahani yake". It's a metaphor that every child comes with their own blessings.
The maternal mortality rate here in Kenya is 42%- 43% these are deliveries done by skilled personnel in hospitals.
We find that most women give birth at home with some who are ignorant or are in dental that they are pregnant. 10% of this women only attend clinics once or twice and leave their fate to God, this might because of stigmatization the society has when you get pregnant while you are young, old, and even single.
A good example is of a beautiful single lady who died while giving birth in her bedroom with the door closed. This happened at a place called Jerusalem in Nairobi Kenya. She was 49 years old.
In my investigation she refused to admit that she was pregnant because she told different stories to different people, to some she said that she had fibroid, to others she says that she had a tumor in her stomach. She didn't want to admit that she was indeed pregnant.
On that fateful day, she come from work, greeted her elder son, (she was a mother of three children with the firstborn who had finished college, the second born girl is a second year student at the university and the last born was in grade 9.) and gave him money for supper and she went straight to her room and locked her self in. When the son came back he hard strange noise coming from her mum's room, he tried to open and call out but to no avail. He tried and tried until finally he was able to break the door. What he say was like a scene from a horror movie. He panicked and went to asked help from the neighbor who was my sister.
When my sister come together with the other neighbor they found the baby lying in a pool of blood with the placenta still attached, thank God the baby was still alive and the mother too, they called for the ambulance but the mother didn't make it to the hospital. The little angel survived and she is being taken care of by the aunt.
What do you think led to this woman to take the step she took?
How do you think the children went through after witnessing the horrible scene?
Our Society is not that friendly many women go through alot because of stigmatization. We should stand up and stand strong for our fellow women to avoid such incidents. # stop stigmatization.
