Collaboration: Jobs for Makuyu Women Initiative

🌱A summary about Jobs for Makuyu Women Initiative
Mission:
To empower single mothers in Makuyu, Kenya, through sustainable employment in organic farming, creating a long-term solution to hunger, malnutrition, and gender-based economic inequality.
📍 Context & Problem
Makuyu is a rural town in Murang’a County facing widespread poverty, food insecurity, and social imbalance. Most children suffer from malnutrition, and women—particularly single mothers—bear the dual burden of unpaid domestic work and sole financial responsibility for their families.
- Children: Suffer from chronic hunger, nutrient-deficient diets, and limited access to education.
- Women: Often abandoned or unsupported by male partners, struggling with no stable income or land access.
- Community: Trapped in a cycle of subsistence farming, with oversaturated local markets and poor infrastructure.
đź’ˇ Our Solution
Establish a cooperative organic farm run by local women, providing:
- Employment for single mothers through accessible, dignified work
- Training in organic agriculture, nutrition, and basic business skills
- Food security for their children and the wider community
- Market integration through value-added organic produce and regional sales
🧩 Why Organic Farming?
- High global demand for organic produce
- Compatible with Makuyu’s red soil (suitable for crops like vegetables, herbs, coffee, and tea)
- Builds on women’s existing farming knowledge
- Environmentally regenerative and economically scalable
👩‍🌾 Our Vision
Short-term: Create jobs and improve household food security.
Long-term: Support women in becoming micro-entrepreneurs—running their own agri-businesses, producing value-added products (e.g., herbs, teas, organic compost), and participating in market cooperatives.
🤝 The Role of Collaboration
The success of this initiative depends on strong partnerships. We are currently seeking support and expertise from organizations in areas such as:
- Agronomic crop selection and training
- Organic certification (PGS system)
- Access to buyers and market linkages
- Shared fundraising and proposal development
This initiative uplifts not just individual families, but shifts gender dynamics and strengthens the local economy.
I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to Purity Waithira, whose insight and encouragement helped shape the vision of building an organic farm as a sustainable solution for the women of Makuyu. I also received tremendous support from the World Pulse family and plan to compile a list of contributors once the initiative is underway. I believe with all the support and collaborations, we can make an impact together!
