"Judith's journey began in her early years, driven by a desire to touch lives."
Judith Achieng Okebe, a youthful mother of two daughters, has dedicated her life to changing the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable children, youth, and women in rural Kenya. Her journey, shaped by selflessness, compassion and an unwavering commitment to make a difference, has led her to become a guardian to over 30 orphans.
A Journey of Compassion
Judith's journey began in her early years, driven by a desire to touch lives. After working in the humanitarian field for over a decade, she felt a personal calling to do more. This led her to found Helping Hands Kenya, a community-based non-profit organization making significant impacts in Mombasa County and beyond.
Early Inspirations
Judith's commitment to improving lives was solidified during her time with UNICEF, where she worked at a Child Dropping Center for street families' rehabilitation. Her experience with KEMRI/CDC as a field technician researcher further deepened her understanding of healthcare issues facing vulnerable communities. Remarkably, Judith's dream of changing lives began at the tender age of 12, supported by her parents as she helped orphans, visited children's homes, and cared for the elderly.
Founding Helping Hands Kenya
As Judith grew older and faced employment challenges in Kenya, she realized there was more she could do to fulfill her dream. Helping Hands Kenya was established to inspire people and contribute to the well-being of vulnerable children, youth, and women. The organization aims to rescue, support, and nurture needy children who would otherwise live in tragic conditions. It also empowers youths and women, providing opportunities for growth and self-sustainability.
Expanding Impact
Judith proudly shared that Helping Hands Kenya has undertaken projects in Turkana, Migori, Mombasa, Kilifi, and Nairobi, with plans to expand to other counties. In her community, Heha Kenya, another grassroots initiative she founded, supports 43 vulnerable children to stay in school. Among them are 10 courageous girls in secondary school facing immediate challenges with school fees and access to basic learning materials.
Overcoming Adversity
These girls had previously dropped out of school, many forced into transactional sex through the painful sex-for-fish trade in the fishing communities around Homa Bay. Through Heha Kenya's sexual reproductive and mental health program, they found the courage to return to school, reclaiming their right to education and dignity. While two girls have secured full sponsorship, about 10 still remain in need. Without support, they risk returning to unsafe environments, early marriages, or permanent dropout.
A Call for Support
Judith emphasizes that Heha Kenya is not funded by institutions but powered by love, personal sacrifice, and the generosity of people who believe in one girl, one future at a time. She reached out, asking for sponsorship or sharing this need within networks. Even small contributions can cover school supplies, a term’s tuition, or sanitary care for a month. Sharing this message might connect them with someone who can help.
Dreaming of a Better Future
Judith also dreams of establishing a small office space for Heha Kenya to coordinate, meet, and support the girls more effectively. Any donation, material or financial, towards this goal would be deeply appreciated. She invites anyone who feels called to visit, to witness the strength of these girls, the resilience of widows, and the beauty of what they are building together from the ground up.
Lesson to Learn
Judith Okebe's story teaches us the power of community and the impact of individual contributions. Her dedication to empowering vulnerable girls through education and support highlights the importance of collective effort and generosity. Together, we can uplift lives and rewrite stories, creating a brighter future for those in need.
