I recently came across a quote from Prof. PLO Lumumba that really hit me:
“If you want to show how good a dancer you are, prove to us during the rehearsal. And no matter how good you are, if you stay for too long you spoil it. A good dancer must know when to leave the stage.”
At first glance, it’s about performance, skill, and timing. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized it’s about life—and, crucially, mental health.
How often do we overstay in situations—jobs, friendships, relationships, or projects—because we feel obligated, afraid, or just unsure? We keep “dancing” when the music has stopped, and it slowly drains us. Burnout, anxiety, and self-doubt sneak in when we ignore the subtle cues that it’s time to step back.
Being “good” doesn’t mean staying forever. True mastery comes from knowing your limits and embracing boundaries. It’s about showing your value, then having the courage to step aside when your contribution is complete. The real skill is timing: knowing when to shine, when to pause, and when to exit gracefully.
For me, this resonates deeply with mental health practices we millennials often overlook. We glorify hustle, constant visibility, and proving ourselves at every turn. But resilience isn’t just pushing harder—it’s self-awareness, reflection, and honouring your mental and emotional capacity. Sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is to pause, step away, or let go—before exhaustion or frustration takes over.
So today, I remind myself—and all of us—to read the rhythm of our lives. Step onto the stage with confidence, deliver your brilliance, and step away when your part is done. Protect your energy, honour your mental space, and remember: leaving at the right time is a sign of wisdom, not weakness.
Your mental health is your stage.
Dance well. Know when to bow.
And don’t be afraid to walk off with grace.
