Lagos Community Dialogue 2.0; A Safe Space to Talk About GBV!

IWD event by Her Story Nigeria with the Theme, "Inspiring Inclusion".

Her Story Nigeria will be hosting an IWD event on the 23rd of March at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. This event is the second edition of the Lagos Community Dialogue!

The challenges we have identified in our community that have prompted the work of Her Story Nigeria are multifaceted. Firstly, there is a pervasive lack of awareness and education regarding women's rights and gender equality. This leads to discriminatory practices and attitudes towards women and girls, limiting their opportunities and perpetuating gender-based violence. Gender inequality not only limits the opportunities available to women and girls but also undermines the overall development of the community. When half of the population is marginalized, it hampers economic growth, social cohesion, and sustainable development.

Secondly, there is a significant rise in gender based violence, particularly violence against women. Gender-based violence is a violation of human rights and has serious physical, psychological, and social consequences. It perpetuates a culture of fear and silence, hindering women and girls from fully participating in society.

Thirdly, there is a need for safe spaces and support systems for women and girls to speak out against gender-based violence and advocate for their rights. Many women and girls in our community face various forms of abuse but are often silenced by societal norms or lack of support. Providing safe spaces and support systems for women and girls is essential for their well-being and empowerment. It allows them to access resources, seek help, and advocate for their rights without fear of reprisal.

Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach that includes education, advocacy, and community engagement. Her Story Nigeria seeks to fill these gaps by providing STEM education and awareness programs, skills development initiatives, and advocacy campaigns to empower women and girls in our community.

The aim of the Lagos Community Dialogue 2.0 is to promote gender equality and women's rights by initiating important conversations, providing education and awareness, and creating a supportive community for women and girls in Nigeria. Through various initiatives, Her Story Nigeria seeks to address the challenges faced by women and girls, such as gender inequality, violence against women, lack of education, and limited opportunities. The project aims to empower women and girls to advocate for their rights, access education and economic opportunities, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Additionally, Her Story Nigeria aims to create a mindset shift in society towards gender equality and create a more inclusive and equitable environment for all.

From speeches to spoken words to an exciting breakout session with heated debates and conversations on GBV, the LCD 2.0 is everything you can imagine and more!
