Level Up Screen Time, Empowering Women Through Internet Literacy

Women ready to grow

Building on the trust and engagement already established through my community, this initiative aims to shift young girl, women’s digital habits, from passive social media scrolling to active skill-building and digital empowerment.

Many young people spend hours on their phones without clear goals, often just scrolling through content. This project will help them move from consumption to creation, using their smartphones as powerful tools for learning, earning, and meaningful connection.

This 2month pilot project will engage 20 to 50 women, equipping them with essential digital skills using the devices they already own. The program will cover:

  1. Internet literacy

  1. Mobile money use

  1. Content creation and storytelling

  1. Access to online learning platforms and job opportunities

  1. Basic computer skills to support personal and professional growth

By teaching both smartphone and computer based skills, the project empowers participants to take control of their digital future not just to keep up with the digital world, but to thrive in it.

Their smiles inspire me. They’re eager to learn, grow, and create change and I want to give them even more reasons to keep going. This is why this initiative matters.

Goal of the Initiative:

To equip 20–50 young girls, women with practical digital skills that transform their smartphones and digital access into tools for learning, income generation, and community engagement, rather than passive content consumption.

Mode of Delivery:

This 2 month pilot will be delivered through:

  1. In-person weekly workshops held at my association space

  1. Hands-on training using participants’ own smartphones and a shared community computer (we stil need computer)

  1. Printed guides and visual aids in local languages or simplified formats

  1. A Facebook or WhatsApp-based peer support group to sustain learning between sessions

  1. Facilitator-led discussions and storytelling activities to build confidence and encourage practical application of new skills

Why This Initiative Works

  1. Leverages existing habits and tools
  2. Most participants already use smartphones but have no idea of its better use
  3. Practical, relevant content
  4. The curriculum focuses on real-world tools: mobile money, online search, content creation, storytelling and basic computer use. These are immediately applicable in daily life and local business contexts.

Peer support = lasting impact

The WhatsApp/Facebook group encourage continued learning, sharing tips and success stories, and troubleshooting challenges beyond the workshops.

Low-cost, high-impact

With minimal resources, we can build real digital confidence, especially among women who are often left out of tech-based opportunities.

Call for Support

This project is a small but powerful step toward bridging the digital divide for women in underserved communities. With your support, we can provide:

  1. A basic computer for training coordination (we need computer)

  1. Internet/data bundles to ensure access during the sessions (we need money for internet cost)

  1. Printed guides and workshop materials

  1. Facilitator support and monitoring tools
