Madagascar: A Land of Riches, A People in Silence

I am Mauritian. I come from a small island with almost no natural resources, and yet, we found our way to development.

And now, living in Madagascar — a vast, breathtaking island with gold, sapphires, garnets, and the world’s finest vanilla — I ask myself every day: how is it possible that such extraordinary wealth brings so little to its people?

Recently, the streets of Madagascar have been filled with anger and despair. Protests. Riots. Businesses destroyed. Lives broken. And underneath it all, one single truth: people are hungry. People are tired. People are unheard.

In 2025, should we still be speaking about access to water and electricity?

Should mothers still have to choose between buying rice and sending their children to school?

Should dignity be crushed so easily under the weight of corruption and silence?

What pains me most is not only the injustice — but the silencing. The ordinary people of Madagascar are not allowed to speak their truth, to say: we need to eat, we need to live, we need to be respected. Instead, they are met with repression, fear, and erasure.

And the paradox remains: an island so rich in natural treasures, yet its people remain among the poorest. Riches continue to be looted by a few, while the majority are left with nothing but struggle.

As an outsider who has made Madagascar my home, I cannot pretend not to feel this pain. I cannot pretend not to see the unfairness. If Mauritius, my little island without gold or gems, can rise and build, why not Madagascar — a land blessed with everything?

The answer is not lack of resources. It is lack of justice. Lack of leadership that serves the people.

The people of Madagascar deserve better.

They deserve dignity.

They deserve to be heard.

They deserve a future where their children inherit not silence, but hope.
