Educating the girl child on menstrual hygiene is not just a matter of personal health, but it is also a crucial aspect of social development. Menstruation is a natural and unavoidable process in the life of a woman, and it is essential to ensure that proper hygienic practices are followed to maintain good health and well-being. Unfortunately, in many communities, menstruation is still considered a taboo subject, and women and girls face stigma and myths surrounding this natural process.
One important aspect of menstrual hygiene is the proper disposal of menstrual pads. Improper disposal of pads can lead to environmental pollution and health hazards. It is crucial to educate women and girls on how to manage their periods in an environmentally friendly way. This includes using reusable pads, which are not only cost-effective but also beneficial for the environment.
Recently on ,25th may 2024, I led a team to educate the women and girls of the Batoke community in Cameroon on menstrual hygiene and environmental sustainability. Our goal was to combat the stigma surrounding menstruation and promote good hygienic practices. We taught the women how to make their own reusable pads, calculate save and unsave periods, properly wear a pad and how to properly use and dispose of them. We also distributed pads and buckets to the community to help them manage their periods effectively.
The response from the community was overwhelming, with 80 women attending the program and benefiting from the educational materials, pads, buckets and supplies, while 30women who were older women already on menopause recieved buckets, We left behind additional pads and short video recordings for those who were unable to attend due to the fact that some were still at their farms and others at their places of work, at the time of the program. The women were grateful for the information and resources provided, and they expressed a desire for more support and empowerment.
In light of this, it's alway been in mind to establish a women's empowerment center in the south west region, where women can learn valuable skills and receive support to improve their livelihoods. This center will not only provide education on menstrual hygiene but also offer training in various hand skills to help women become self-sufficient and independent.h
Reason why i got engaged in the Ms Money woman Pageant 2024, and was honored to be crowned the first runner-up during this pageant. I am committed to using this platform to advocate for women's rights and empowerment. I believe that by working together and forming partnerships, we can create a period-friendly world where women are empowered to take control of their health and well-being.
In conclusion, educating the girl child in menstrual hygiene is a vital step towards social development and empowerment. By promoting good hygienic practices and environmental sustainability, we can help women and girls live healthier and more fulfilling lives. Let us join hands to end period poverty and create a world where every woman has access to the resources and support she needs to thrive.
Please partner and collaborate with us, to make this dream of setting up a women empowerment center come true.
