Me sharing tips to the girls MHD2025

For 4 years now, Life Aid For Community Development Initiative has been commemorating MHD in its own little way. This year, we collaborated with some other organizations to pool resources and raise our voices together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.

The target were 100 girls from 10 schools in the community. The Local Government Area and other stakeholders like school managements and community leaders were in attendance.

The Objective of the program was to educate, empower, and equip girls with menstrual hygiene knowledge and supplies.

To also give the stakeholders opportunities to hear the expectations of the girls for creating a period friendly world.

After an Icebreaker and a brief welcome  the girls were at home and ready to watch the #flow with pride film that exposed them to how girls from different backgrounds and parts of Nigeria navigate menstrual hygiene and poverty. This film was premiered that day ( May 28th ) and we were privileged to be part of those to first watch it. It triggered questions and contributions. And it was more beautiful because girls could discuss in languages they were fluent in.

The film also addressed myths that girls in this program relate to like periods making menstruating girls unholy and harmful to plants.

The girls were given tips on having hygienic and healthy periods and how to Place pads Step-by-step demo using models or visuals  Emphasis was made on proper disposal  of sanitary products .

The peak of the program was when the girls engaged the stakeholders. They have feedback on what they think their parents, communities and Government should do to achieve a period friendly world.

They complained of lack/ inadequate toilets and water in schools.

They expressed their desire to have their parents and teachers more open to talking about periods.

They called on the communities to stop menstrual stigma.

They asked for pad banks in school to fight period poverty.

They called on the Government to cut or totally remove taxes for sanitary products.

The program ended with distribution of reusable Pads & Detergents  and a group photograph.

Life Aid is committed to joining the war against period poverty. No one should have her period in shame and indignity. No girl should be kept off any activity she wants to, especially school.

MHDays are great days to do speak about the challenges but they are just one day in a year. Girls menstruate every other day. More actions are still desired.

May our efforts all help achieve a period friendly world.
