#MeToo in Bangladesh: Breaking Silence, One Voice at a Time

Back in 2018, when I was just a teenager, a campaign hit me hard and made my blood boil — it was the #MeToo campaign. I still remember feeling both shocked and inspired at the same time. Even today, if someone asks me to name a campaign that moved me the most, this is the first one that comes to my mind.

1) Introduction (What, When, How)

The #MeToo reached Bangladesh around mid-November 2018.

Women I could relate to—students, journalists, and young professionals—started sharing their personal experiences of harassment on Facebook. Reading their posts made me realize how close this issue really is to all of us. These posts quickly spread, encouraging others to speak up as well.

One of the most visible moments was a human chain in front of the Jatiya(National) Press Club in Dhaka. Female journalists and activists stood together to show solidarity. National news channels like BanglaVision reported on it, highlighting courage and growing support.

2) Its Purpose

The main goal of the #MeToo campaign was to break the silence around harassment. It encouraged women to speak up, raise awareness, and challenge victim-blaming. It also created conversations that were often avoided in Bangladesh.

3) What made it successful?

•Social media allowed women to share stories widely.

•Led by ordinary women, making it relatable and authentic.

•Solidarity inspired more women to join.

•Media coverage amplified the message across the country.

4) What stood out most to me?

The focus on digital spaces and online expression was striking.

I remember once I shared my thoughts about freedom in a comment on a women-related post, and two strangers mocked me. That small moment made me feel the same frustration and urgency I saw in the #MeToo campaign.

Youth-led actions were inspiring. Young women courageously took leadership roles, even without much support.

The combination of online and offline actions showed that change can happen in many forms, even in a society where not all women have equal digital access.

5) What can we learn from their work and effort?

•Awareness requires courage and collective effort.

•Small actions can grow into big impact.

•Empowering women to lead makes the message stronger.

•Digital tools can spread awareness fast but must be safe.

6) Conclusion

The #MeToo campaign in Bangladesh was not just a single action—it was a moment where women, like those I saw online, chose to speak instead of staying silent. It inspired me, and I know it inspired countless others. It showed that change begins with courage and grows through unity. Even today, its impact continues as more women feel encouraged to raise their voices and challenge injustice.

N.B: For my training assignment from the first lecture, I tried my best to present this topic in a realistic way. If anyone has feedback, I would truly appreciate it. If not, that’s completely okay too.
