Moo-ve Over Juice Drink



If you're watching your weight, you might want to start your day with some nonfat milk, according to a new study from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. When 34 overweight people drank 20 ounces of nonfat milk at breakfast--instead of an equal amount of fruit drink--they ate 50 fewer calories at lunch. In each case, that was a lot of fluid, but presumably the milk made them feel more full, an effect that lasted at least several hours.



It's not known if drinking milk made participants eat fewer total calories over the whole day, though (maybe they made up the calories at dinner). Keep in mind also that the research was supported by a dairy food company and that previous studies on dairy foods and weight control have had mixed results.



Still, nonfat milk is a good source of protein and calcium (and only 80 calories per cup)--and is certainly more nutritious than fruit drink, which is often loaded with sugar. Read more -
