Welp, I’ve found yet another complete joke of a webpage droning on how men have it worse, because… women, for some reason. Here’s what I mean:
”I just got done watching a video from a YouTuber I enjoy and respect: MoviesWithMikey. In the video talks about how good Scream is even today...but ends on the old chestnut of criticizing horror for being misogynistic against women...even going so far as to side with perpetual enemy of the genre; Gene Siskel.
Now I'm not saying Siskel is without merit...but to say I resoundingly disagreed with the man more often than not is an understatement.
The oft discussed sexism in horror is a topic I find exhausting. I am in no way denying that the topic lacks merit. In fact, I see where a lot of it comes from.
So much of horror is pure exploitation - violence and nudity meant to titilate. And the vast majority of the nudity is from women. But no the violence. I believe, on average, men have more gruesome on-screen deaths than women. And we can't ignore that underneath all the nudity and violence, it's almost always a woman who conquers the evil. The horror genre has done more for strong female characters than any other genre.
Here's an honest question: At the end of the day...what is really wrong with exploitation for the sake it? "Oh but it's just mindless sex and violence for cheap thrills!" Ok. So? YOU may not see value in it, but others do. There is nothing inherently wrong with liking to watch attractive people get naked in films. It's really that simple. People have been enjoying horror/exploitation for decades with no untoward results. Why? Because the vast majority of people are smart enough to understand entertainment as just entertainment.
Watching Last House On the Left and I Spit On Your Grave isn't gonna turn someone into a murdering rapist. In fact, I'd argue horror stimulates people to be *more empathetic" than any other genre. Fans don't watch these films to exorcise some deep seated perversion. They watch them because the dark side of humanity is a fascinating world to explore.
Yes, part of it is that grand guignol aspect, but why are horror films and fans feared and judged for it but say, MMA and boxing fans aren't?
I can't think of a genre that treats women more respectfully than horror. Women are the heroes. Women are sexually open in horror and unapologetic about it. They are the smartest people in the room.
The trope of "have sex/do drugs and die" is rather false if you dive deeper than the surface. These films don't conflate sex with death...sex is just part of the theatrics of the genre.
Halloween? Laurie smokes pot. Annie and Lynda don't die because they were sexually active. They died because they weren't paying enough attention to the world around them.
F13th? The series most associated with this trope? Alice was most definately sexually involved with Steve in the original film. Chris in Part 3 was also involved with a guy prior to the films opening.
Megan in Part 6? Come on! And why aren't the men ever mentioned in this conversation? They're horny, too. They fuck and die just as often. But why is it only sexist when it happens to the women?
Idk, I wanted this post to be more erudite than it is. I'm punching it out on a whim on my mobile...so I guess I can't expect much from myself there.”
I would love to commentate on this piece of shit, but I honestly don’t have the time and energy to roast the shit out of him. What I CAN say however is that he sounds like a horror movie fanatic that can’t take criticism.
