My Fitness Journey. How Discipline, Faith, and Yoga Helped Me Rise Again

You are allowed to outgrow who you used to be. In fact, it is healthy. You SHOULD outgrow who you used to be. You SHOULD evolve and become a better version of You. Change is the one constant thing in life that becomes the doorway to transformation, healing, and purpose.

Before I begin, I want to remind every woman reading this: be gentle with yourselves. Life is already demanding, and too often we are our own harshest critics. You are doing the best you can, even if it doesn’t look perfect. Whether you are trying to lose weight, heal your skin, strengthen your mental health, or simply survive another day, your effort counts. As women, we carry so much — emotionally, physically, and spiritually. And sometimes the most radical act of love we can offer ourselves is patience and kindness. Acknowledge your journey. Acknowledge your effort. You are not behind — you are on your way.

Two years ago, I lost my spark. I have always been naturally slim, but during a painful season of depression, my body changed. I carried heaviness in my spirit that eventually showed up in my body. I gained weight that wasn’t really about food — it was about grief, loneliness, and unprocessed emotions. Depression has a way of dimming your light until you forget who you are. But this year feels different. This year, I feel like God has poured fresh grace into my life. I am slowly regaining my spark, reconnecting with the routines I used to love, and remembering that my body is a temple worth caring for.

For me, that has meant moving more intentionally into fitness, yoga, and self-discipline. It’s not just about losing weight; it’s about coming back home to myself. Through this journey, I’ve learned that the real journey is within. Self-esteem, peace, healing — they are cultivated from the inside out. And one of the greatest lessons has been the importance of protecting my peace at all costs. That means being discerning about the people I surround myself with. Be with women who empower you, who celebrate your growth, and who are not intimidated by your light. Stay away from environments that drain you, steal your energy, or leave you doubting your worth. Protecting your peace is not selfish — it is survival.

Health is the foundation of a happy and productive life. In this fast-paced world, it is so easy to get caught up in chasing success, deadlines, and validation, while forgetting to take care of ourselves. But what good is wealth without health? What good is recognition if your body is exhausted and your spirit is broken? On this journey of wellness, I have learned that what truly matters is health — physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Whether it is through exercising, meditation, eating nourishing foods, or simply getting enough rest, we have to commit to prioritizing our well-being every single day. Small, consistent acts of care add up to a stronger, healthier, more joyful life.

Yoga and meditation have been anchors for me. They are not just practices for the body but medicine for the mind and soul. Yoga helps me release tension, breathe more deeply, and reconnect with my body after years of disconnect. Meditation strengthens my focus, brings me back to balance, and helps me move through life with more clarity and calm. Sometimes I jog, sometimes I dance, sometimes I just take a quiet walk in the morning — all these are ways of energizing my mind and spirit. I am also making intentional choices with food, eating balanced meals, adding more fruits and vegetables, and remembering to hydrate my body with enough water. These small, ordinary practices have extraordinary power to reshape how we feel about ourselves.

Authenticity is everything. You cannot evolve if you’re busy pretending to be someone else. If you want the beautiful flowers of your life to blossom, you must first endure the rain. You must face the shadow work, the discomfort, the self-awareness that many people run from. Too many want the results without walking through the process. But it is in the rain that we learn to grow. For me, fasting, prayer, and deep reflection have been part of this process. They have taught me that everything we search for outside of ourselves — validation, recognition, peace — already lives within. When you look within, you draw closer to God.

I’ve also stopped chasing validation. In humanitarian spaces, and even in personal relationships, it is easy to crave recognition. But I’ve realized that true power comes when you validate yourself. Stop waiting for people to notice you. Stop waiting for applause. Accept yourself. Validate your worth. Understand that your imperfections are what make you human. You are not what happened to you. You are not your traumas. You are who you choose to become in the healing process.

Discipline has also been a key part of my transformation. Discipline is not something you’re born with; it is a muscle that must be trained, one step at a time. Every time you choose discipline, you are choosing yourself. You are honoring the version of you that deserves the life you dream of. Discipline is self-love in action. Don’t compare yourself to others — compare yourself to your fears, your bad habits, and your distractions. That is your real competition.

And here’s the truth: you are allowed to outgrow who you used to be. Change is healthy. Healing is necessary. Evolution is part of life. Don’t be afraid to let go of old versions of yourself that no longer serve your purpose. Keep trying. Keep growing. Keep becoming. Trust the process. Each small step you take matters.

I began my journey of losing weight and reclaiming myself in February. Looking back, I can only say it is the grace of God that carried me. It was fasting, exercise, yoga, and the discipline to keep showing up for myself that brought me back to my body and my soul. I am proud of myself for not giving up. And I want every woman reading this to know: you can begin again, too.

So I leave you with this: take a moment today to reflect on what you’ve read. Choose one or two small actions you can implement into your daily life — whether it’s drinking more water, taking a mindful walk, journaling your feelings, or simply resting without guilt. Start small. Be patient with yourself. And celebrate each step you take towards a healthier, happier you. Healing is not a destination — it is a journey. And you are worthy of every step.
