My vision as a journalist reporting China to the world

I am writing down these words in sincerely hope that, although delayed, I could still be considered as a candidate for the Voice of Future program in 2011. I have been under a lot of pressure and working many late nights recently. It is all because I have a vision for my life, community and the world. Otherwise, I would not quit the old, easier job, and threw myself in this new one, a field reporter for the national television station, a job offering nothing better than the original one other than a chance to be a 'real' journalist.

Since childhood, I have been always fansinated by the profession of journalists, in a strange way. How great it is to be an observer of society and tell stories of people through your own observation! How interesting it is to be able to talk to various people whom you have never met in person but share personal experiences and opinion! With this immature but passionate understanding, I kept seeking opportunities to enter this profession. I studied English in college, specializing in language, media and cultural communication, since I knew language skills should be the first step to become a journalist and understanding western journalism principles would be a key start into this business. I finally made my next step into journalism by entering China's best postgraduate program in journalims and communication after college, and spent three years in Fudan University, in Shanghai, dedicating study as well as research into journalism and communication. With my language skills, I am becoming increasingly interested in global communication and the news flow worldwide.

Becoming a journalist, a real one, and report from China to the world has been my vision ever since. After entering China's central televion as an English language news reporter, I felt like this vision is getting closer to be realized. China, as the second biggest economic power globally, has been reported extensively by international media over the years. However, the real situation of China and life of Chinese people are not really well understood by the world. Stories still undiscovered, voices unheard. It is the responsibility of us, the younger and more educated generation, to make some difference.

However, it is not that easy for women to be television journalists here in China these days. This is a time-requiring and energy-consuming job. For a piece of news, we usually spend days and nights interviewing, writing and editting, rushing around in the city and always lack of sleep or stable meals. Actually, many have given up, because of age and requirements of family. I personally thought about leaving this tiring job once, but luckily, I made it till today.

That is why I am sincerely looking forward to be one of Voice of our Future Correspondents. China represents the future of the world's economy and this country is going through so many changes. People's life are transforming, so are their minds. Women in China are generally independent but have their own particular problems that need to be known and solved. My vision would be finding a position to fulfill these above responsibilities, as a journalist, for my job or as part of my life. Voice of Our Future program will be a path to realize this vision of a young, dedicated, and strong-minded Chinese female journalist.
