Nigeria @65: Chains of Poverty, Wings of Faith - My Independence Reflection

As Nigeria celebrates her Independence Day, I pause to ask myself: what does independence really mean? For me it is more than flags waving and speeches made. Independence is about breaking free from the chains that still hold us down - the chains of poverty, injustice and lost opportunities.

I know these chains too well. Poverty threatened my education. There were moments I wasn’t sure if I would return to school the next term. Opportunities slipped through my hands not because I lacked the ability but because I lacked the means. I remember the pain of being looked down upon, denied access and treated with little or no regard simply because poverty had already written a story others thought I could never change.

Yet even in those moments I chose not to surrender. Poverty is trying to silence me but I am founding my voice. It's trying to bury my dreams but I am holding on to vision, courage and faith. And these are my wings.

So when I speak of independence I see beyond 1960. I dream of a Nigeria where no child is too poor to learn. Where no girl is silenced by circumstance. Where dignity is restored, justice flows and opportunity belongs to all.

True independence is not just what our nation gained decades ago. It is what WE as a people must keep fighting for every day - freedom from poverty, inequality and hopelessness.

This is my HOPE. This is my FIGHT. This is my FAITH.

Happy Independence Day Nigeria. May we rise together above every chain and may our wings of faith carry us into the future we deserve. 🇳🇬
