Introduction

Njeri wa Migwi’s consistency in national activism and her push for social justice in East Africa continue to reflect her unwavering commitment to justice, survivor empowerment, and systemic change in Kenya. As the founder of Usikimye, she remains on the front lines of the fight against gender-based violence, while also expanding her advocacy into broader areas of social justice and political accountability.

Deepening Political and Civic Engagement

In a powerful message shared in April 2025, Njeri emphasised the importance of collective memory and civic responsibility. Reflecting on Kenya’s political history and referencing the BBC documentary Blood Parliament, she urged citizens to remember the sacrifices made during times of political unrest and to remain vigilant against manipulation and injustice 1. Her call to action suggests a growing focus on political education and voter accountability, particularly as Kenya approaches future elections.

Expanding Usikimye’s Reach

Njeri continues to lead Usikimye in responding to the rising tide of gender-based violence in Kenya. With nearly 60 women reportedly killed in the first few months of 2024 alone, she has described the situation as a national crisis 2. Her future plans include:

  1. Scaling up safe houses to accommodate the increasing number of survivors seeking refuge.
  2. Strengthening legal advocacy to push for femicide to be recognised as a distinct crime.
  3. Enhancing digital outreach to reach more survivors in remote areas through mobile and online platforms.

Addressing Reproductive Injustice and Societal Stigma

Njeri is also expanding her activism to include reproductive justice and mental health awareness. She has spoken about the need to confront the silence and stigma surrounding issues like reproductive health, trauma, and societal expectations placed on women 3. Her future work is expected to include:

  1. Community dialogues on reproductive rights and bodily autonomy.
  2. Mental health support programs for survivors of abuse and trauma.
  3. Policy advocacy to improve access to reproductive healthcare and counselling services.
