Basically what most excites me about Web 2.0 is the fact that I can get to connect with women from different parts of the world who share stories about women that are unique in every way. Having used various search engines and networking sites, I have come to realize that so many things that seemed impossible in the past is now very possible within a twinkle of an eye or a snap of the finger, all that is required is a tap on your key board or phone keypad, an internet connection and your message or post is online for everyone to see, there by turning communication into an interactive dialogue. This has no doubt helped me in my job as a Broadcaster.
Web 2.0 is something that allows the exchange of user generated content and it will help to bring together women from all walks of life in different parts of the world who share their stories and projects as it happens in their various localities and they make these posts in their own words which makes it very unique. For instance I have never heard of the term “Breast Ironing” and that came as a bit of rude shock to me but then something like Web 2.0 will help in throwing light on some strange things happening in various parts of the world where women are facing various challenges. It will help in enlightening women about happenings, educating them on the challenges faced by women in other parts of the globe, it will throw light on methods used in tackling these challenges and also the implication of fighting any cause just like the case of Female Genital Mutilation in some parts of Nigeria where it is mandatory practice and if a woman tries to run away to avoid going under the unsterilized knife, her family may disown her so this portal will help women come together and discuss the way forward on issues like this.
The Web 2.0 has helped me on the job as a broadcaster in building content through the feedback I get from my viewers and listeners alike and it will further make my job easier because I will get global content for my various programmes from women who are giving personal stories and sharing information, through this tool I will definitely get a good number of contacts that I can call on phone in any part of the world for them to contribute on my live programmes on Radio and Television. It will also help me share my stories and reports with other women across the globe, not forgetting the education people will gain from logging on to read from any part of the world. The Web 2.0 will give me the opportunity of taking advantage of a window to the world on women issues.
