EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT
On a small hospital bench near the pediatric ward, I saw a child sitting quietly, his eyes scanning the hallway, his little hands gripping a toy he wasn’t playing with. He wasn’t crying, but he was deeply sad. His parent couldn’t be with him that day, and the absence wasn’t just physical. It echoed in his silence, in the stillness of his presence. That moment marked me deeply.
Working in the Health Department, Government of Sindh, and leading Media and Communications at the Sindh Institute of Child Health and Neonatology (SICHN), I witness daily how critical emotional support is during a child’s formative years. That single encounter strengthened my belief: the presence of a parent or caregiver is often the most healing medicine.

At SICHN, our approach to pediatric healthcare goes beyond clinical treatment. We focus on holistic, child-centered care. Through our Early Childhood Development (ECD) initiatives, I’ve been privileged to lead programs that address not only physical health but also emotional well-being. With the support of UNICEF Pakistan, we are establishing parenting corners, child-friendly spaces, and caregiver education sessions across our hospital network.
These safe and nurturing environments ensure that children, especially those who are alone or vulnerable, feel seen, valued, and comforted. Our goal is to build a system where healthcare and human care coexist.
Parenting isn’t just about being physically present. It’s about being emotionally available and intentional. Every shared smile, every comforting touch, and every moment of care in a child’s early years contributes to shaping a confident, emotionally resilient future adult.

As a communication professional in healthcare, and as a storyteller at heart, I believe these untold moments are where true healing begins. Let’s continue to create spaces where every child feels held even when their parents cannot be there. On a small hospital bench near the pediatric ward, I saw a child sitting quietly, his eyes searching the hallway, his shoulders heavy with silence. He wasn’t in pain, but he was deeply sad. His parent couldn’t be with him that day. The absence wasn’t just physical; it echoed in his withdrawn behavior, in the way he clutched his toy without playing with it. That moment stayed with me. As someone who is working in pediatric healthcare and child advocacy, I’ve witnessed how a parent’s presence can be the most powerful medicine during a child’s early years.
At the Sindh Institute of Child Health and Neonatology (SICHN), under the Health Department, Government of Sindh, we are working passionately to bridge this emotional and developmental gap. As Head of Media and Communications and a strong advocate for early childhood care, I lead our Early Childhood Development (ECD) initiatives across the SICHN network, designed not just to treat illnesses but to nurture the whole child.
With generous support from UNICEF Pakistan , we are building parenting corners, child-friendly spaces, and running caregiver education sessions. These efforts offer comfort and connection to children, especially those who don’t always have a parent by their side.
Parenting is not just about being present; it’s about being intentional. And every loving interaction in the early days plants the seeds for a healthier, brighter future.
