One scene of The Mother seems to be anti-vegan gaslighting

So I was watching a movie called The Mother, which is a film on Netflix, and while a decent film, there’s one scene that rubbed me the wrong way.

So, when Mother realizes Zoe is her biological daughter, she decides to teach her survival skills. Then comes the dinner scene, when she demands Zoe to eat deer and rabbit. Zoe refuses because she believes the animals were killed just for the purpose to be eaten.

So Mother attempts to gaslight her saying that the deer and rabbit had better lives than whatever Zoe ate her whole life and that there is nothing to eat that involved violence. Then when Zoe lists the things she does eat, Mother contradicts her by mentioning anything regarding violence and animal cruelty.

I can’t say whether Zoe is a vegetarian or not since the movie doesn’t make any descriptions regarding her lifestyle. But regardless, it sounds like Mother’s logic is “if you can eat whatever you like that involves violence and animal cruelty, then you will eat whatever I put on your plate”.

Like no, that’s not how it works. It’s the same mindset of “eat it or starve” as it places authority on those of power while it undermines the rights of others. If I were to be given something I will not eat, I would rather starve to death than violate my standards just to please someone with a closed mind. And I’m not even a vegetarian.

In other words, it just endorses abuse and gaslighting, leaving her daughter to feel guilty for something so unnecessary.
