Opportunity

For an entire year now I have not served on a non profit board after serving without a break since 1981. I left an organization called GLSEN (after 10 years) teaching respect for all children regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. I served previously on GreatSchools.net,(public school quality guide) CityYear (national service), the Women's Leadership Board of the Kennedy School, The Center for Living with Dying and a few more. Since I began my career in technology companies I had been volunteering right along because I wanted to make a difference in the social sector while building prosperity in the private sector. This seemed to work for me until 9.11.2011 when our "safe" little corner of the world was turned upside down. Soon after I took inventory on my life and recognized that climbing the corporate ladder wasn't going to arrive anywhere I wanted to be. I started my own coaching and consulting practice and have chosen to work with leaders who are making a positive difference in the quality of life for others. I also pursued spiritual training and became a licensed minister, while continuing to perform as a singer and songwriter of tunes I hoped would inspire. Taking a break from service seemed unnatural but there was a clear voice in me that said, wait, I have something more for you to do. I have had several offers to join boards since then but none of them has seemed right. Once I read the book "Half the Sky", I knew there was something more I must do and something related to working with women and not just in my own backyard. Just two weeks ago, I saw an email and it talked about being a vision mentor for World Pulse correspondents, one of the persons inviting women to apply was Ellen Winguard who I admired and who I served on a board with several years before. Everything fell into place and I applied, they said yes and I said yes and now I am so excited to have the privilege of serving in this way. I can't wait to meet my visionary sister on the road to raising up women's voices and changing the world! What I am learning is to wait, is to empty my cup so it can be filled, to follow the intuition even when I am not sure where it will lead. I am trusting that my desire to do good, brings good my way.
