Introduction
On March 5, 2022, in Nairobi, Kenya, Ambassador Maryben Omollo—an internationally recognized mental health and leadership coach, 17-time award-winning speaker, and founder of the Maryben Foundation—joined fellow honorees of the Africa Top 40 Under 40 Kenya Caravan in a courtesy visit to the CEO of the National Youth Council (NYC), Mr. Roy Sasaka. The visit was more than ceremonial; it was a powerful statement of purpose, unity, and youth-led transformation. With a global reach of over 50 million and a mission to build resilient and inclusive workplaces across Africa, Omollo continues to use her platform to advocate for youth empowerment, ethical leadership, and sustainable development. This visit underscored the alignment between the Council’s vision and the aspirations of young professionals across Kenya and the continent.
The Vision of the National Youth Council
The National Youth Council (NYC) of Kenya envisions itself as a dynamic institution championing youth empowerment, unity, and inclusion for national prosperity and stability. As a youth-centric public body, NYC plays a critical role in shaping policies, programs, and platforms that elevate the voices and potential of young people. The Africa Top 40 Under 40 Kenya Caravan’s visit to NYC was a strategic alignment of shared values. Both entities recognise that the future of Kenya—and Africa at large—rests in the hands of its youth. The meeting was a celebration of this shared vision and a commitment to collaborative action.
Youth as Catalysts for Peace and Unity
One of the key themes of the visit was the importance of youth leadership during Kenya’s electioneering period. The delegation emphasised that their upcoming trip to Ghana was not just a professional milestone, but a symbolic gesture of unity and peace. They aimed to represent all Kenyan youth—across tribes, regions, and political affiliations—and to demonstrate that young people can be agents of cohesion rather than division. Ambassador Omollo and her peers believe that youth have the power to influence their communities and leaders to act with integrity. They reject the notion that one must compromise values to gain access or influence. Instead, they advocate for delivering value, working collaboratively, and supporting one another in the spirit of nation-building.
Redefining Success: Beyond Wealth to Impact
Another powerful message from the delegation was the need to redefine what success looks like for young Africans. While financial stability is important, Omollo and her colleagues urged their peers to pursue holistic ventures—those that prioritise sustainability, mentorship, and long-term impact. They encouraged young professionals to invest not only in their businesses and careers but also in their communities. By mentoring the next generation, they can create a ripple effect of empowerment and opportunity. This mindset shift—from individual gain to collective growth—is essential for building a resilient and inclusive Africa.
The Role of Recognition and Representation
Being named among Africa’s Top 40 Under 40 is a significant honour, but for Omollo and her fellow honorees, it is also a responsibility. They view their recognition not as a personal achievement alone, but as a platform to inspire others and to advocate for meaningful change. Their visit to NYC was a reminder that representation matters. When young people see their peers engaging with national institutions, leading initiatives, and speaking truth to power, they are more likely to believe in their own potential. Visibility breeds possibility.
A Call to Collective Action
Throughout the visit, the message was clear: the future of Africa depends on the choices and actions of its youth. But this future cannot be built in isolation. It requires collaboration, mutual support, and a shared commitment to integrity and excellence. Ambassador Omollo emphasised that young people must stop fighting each other for limited opportunities and instead focus on creating new ones together. By lifting each other up, they can build a continent that thrives on innovation, inclusion, and justice.
Reflection
Ambassador Maryben Omollo’s participation in the Africa Top 40 Under 40 Kenya Caravan’s visit to the National Youth Council was more than a ceremonial gesture—it was a declaration of purpose. It reflected her unwavering belief in the power of youth to shape the future of Africa through unity, integrity, and sustainable action. Her message to young people is both inspiring and practical: you don’t need to compromise your values to make a difference. You don’t need to wait for permission to lead. And you don’t need to walk the path alone. By working together, supporting one another, and staying true to their purpose, young Africans can transform their communities—and their continent.
Lesson to Learn
Youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are the changemakers of today. True leadership is not about titles or recognition; it’s about service, collaboration, and impact. When young people unite around shared values and a common vision, they become an unstoppable force for good. The future of Africa lies not in division, but in unity. Not in compromise, but in courage. Not in waiting, but in action.
