Mahatma Gandhi once said that it is important to be the change you want to see. Making change happen is one thing, but keeping that sustained is another. The answer, is exactly as Gandhi pointed out: in being the change oneself. That’s the surest way of making sure that the lasting impact of the change you make, remains sustainable and owned.

Personifying the resilience it takes to make a difference like that, is Dr. Prince Imani of Bukavu, Congo. An inspiring young Congolese doctor, he works at Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, and also runs a local change-making organization named Médecins au Service Des Demunis, which translates to mean Doctors working for the Vulnerable. Persevering entirely on his own, Dr. Prince has worked hard to ensure that women who are in rural communities are given access to the medical care they deserve.

How does he do this?

Through a series of mobile clinic missions and a small health centre called Afya Bora and a tremendous amount of will. Having seen how much of an impact his efforts have had in his community, Dr. Prince wants to go the extra mile and launch a health centre in the Kavumu community in South Kivu – a region known for its instability and incidences of violence. Channel Initiative is partnering MSD and Dr. Imani in this inspiring initiative, as we work together to serve and empower vulnerable Congolese women.

What are we going to do?

Well, we are going to support him and his organisation in developing the new Afya Bora clinic in Kavumu, and work hard to help him get what he needs to provide high quality and holistic healthcare to the women in this village. We are currently raising funds to help put together an inventory of supplies and medication, and to increase his staff and their capacity as well. We are looking to work alongside Dr. Prince to develop his vision, and to ensure that his work is effective, sustainable, meaningful and empowering.
