Rising Above Adversity - The Inspiring Journey of Rev. Dr. Penny Ruth W. Njoroge
Early Life and Education
Rev. Dr. Penny Ruth W. Njoroge, HSC, FAIS, BCC, was born as the first of ten children in Muranga, Kenya, during a time when girls were primarily raised to marry, raise children, and serve their families. From a young age, Penny exhibited a strong desire for education. At the age of five, she begged her parents to send her to school, a request that angered her paternal grandfather, an influential community leader. He immediately rejected her plea, branding her a bad omen and warning other family girls to avoid her influence.
Despite the initial rejection, Penny's determination never wavered. She tirelessly pestered and bargained with her father until she was finally allowed to join school at the age of eleven. This decision led to severe consequences; her grandfather disowned and disinherited Penny's father, forcing the family to relocate to Nairobi's poorest slums. There, they grew food along the Nairobi River and Mukuru for their consumption and sold produce at Wakulima market to pay for school fees.
Overcoming Obstacles
Determined to ensure her parents never regretted their sacrifice, Penny worked diligently and earned admission to the prestigious Alliance Girls High School. She dreamed of pursuing cardiology at university but paused her education after high school to help raise and educate her siblings. Penny married and had four children, balancing her family responsibilities with her career aspirations.
Trained as a stenographer and secretary, Penny became the first African secretary at the National Christian Council of Kenya (NCCK). Her exceptional performance led to her secondment to the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) as an Administrative Executive Secretary, where she won several awards for her work. However, her personal life was marred by domestic abuse, which motivated her to train privately as a counsellor. Penny was determined to help others avoid depression and survive the trauma she experienced during her 30-year marriage, which ultimately ended in divorce.
Pursuing Higher Education and Career in the USA
At the age of 56, Penny moved to the USA with her younger children and joined college after her youngest son finished his education. She trained as a resident hospital psychiatric chaplain, working tirelessly by cleaning houses and caring for patients at night to support her family and pay for her college fees. Despite the tough circumstances, Penny graduated with full honours, Summa cum Laude, earning a Ph.D. in Psychiatric Counseling Psychology (Psy.D).
Passionate about offering others what she missed during her 25 years of depression, Dr. Penny became an ordained minister with the Anglican Church of North America in the Jurisdiction of Chaplains to The Armed Forces, specializing in mental health. She worked for many years in a major hospital system, eventually retiring as a Lead Psychologist in their Behavioral Health Center to operate her own private practice, Angel Counseling Services, LLC, based in Birmingham, Alabama, USA.
Advocacy and Achievements
Dr. Penny's work and advocacy for the mentally ill have earned her numerous awards, including Kenya's Head of State Commendation (HSC) for her community services in both Kenya and the USA. As a Certified Telemental Health Specialist and an award-winning keynote motivational and conference speaker, Dr. Penny constantly educates the public on the need to demystify mental illness. She advocates for removing shame, stigma, and discrimination so that the mentally ill and their families can seek help without fear. Her efforts aim to control suicide and homicides, especially among the youth, whose rising deaths threaten the future.
A Testament to Resilience
Dr. Penny's journey is a testament to the power of resilience, hard work, and determination. Her story encourages everyone to dream and live their full potential, impacting other lives positively.
