Rising From Rejection to Global Impact

My name is Okonkwo Stella Nkechi, and I am a proud Nigerian woman — a teacher, grassroots NGO founder, and now... a global volunteer.

But none of this came easy.

I've always believed in the power of giving back — even when I had little. That belief birthed my NGO, A Better Tomorrow Initiative, focused on girl-child education, menstrual health, and feeding programs in underserved communities. I've walked dusty roads to reach schools. I've cooked with my last coins. I've cried, fallen — but I never gave up.

Still, life tested me. A person I trusted once told me I wasn't worth their time unless I "brought business to the table." It shattered me. For weeks, I couldn't sleep. I questioned everything.

But then I decided: If they won’t give me a seat at the table, I’ll build my own.

I picked up my phone, my old laptop, and began applying — to fellowships, conferences, volunteering opportunities. Some days, 10 at a time. I stayed up late, crafting applications, telling my story, believing someone, somewhere would listen.

And then... it happened.

I was selected by VSO International to teach English in Uzbekistan as a global volunteer. A girl who once thought her voice didn’t matter is now preparing to impact lives across borders. I still can’t believe it.

And I should mention: I live with an eye condition. It has made my journey harder, but it has never defined or defeated me. Instead, it’s made me more determined to serve — and to stand as hope for others facing invisible battles.

I'm sharing this on World Pulse because this platform reminds women like me that we belong. That our pain is not the end of our story — it’s the beginning of our rise.
