We walk with the most vulnerable communities, co-creating solutions to today’s most pressing challenges—climate change, food insecurity, and access to technology. Their journey is our journey. The road is not easy, but it is necessary, and we have chosen to walk it together.
Safina was born in 2018 when a group of young student activists came together with a bold vision: to uproot the oppressive systems that hold back our communities from empowerment, technology, and development. We sought not only to confront violence, inequality, and gender discrimination, but to reimagine a future where education, resources, and opportunities are universal rights—not privileges for a few.
It began at Tenwek High School, Bomet County, where a small team led by Daniel Ruto launched an afforestation campaign. What started as planting trees soon grew into something greater. We realized our mission was not just about restoring the environment—it was about dismantling the barriers that keep people in cycles of poverty and exclusion.
We had seen how technology was reserved for the wealthy, how women and girls were denied education, and how entire communities were shut out of life-changing opportunities. We refused to accept that reality. Instead, we committed ourselves to building systems that empower the marginalized, amplify unheard voices, and unlock the full potential of communities too often left behind.
Today, we are proud to share some of the initiatives that embody this mission.
1. Linda farmer: Tech for Food Security
In rural Kenya, smallholder farmers—especially women—struggle daily with crop losses caused by diseases they cannot diagnose in time. That’s why we created Linda farmer, a platform under development by our climate action and tech team.
With just a smartphone, a farmer can take a photo of their crop and instantly receive AI-powered guidance on possible diseases and treatment options. Beyond diagnostics, Linda farmer will provide essential farming tips and resources—ensuring that technology is not a luxury, but a lifeline.
We are building Linda farmer hand-in-hand with the very farmers who will use it, so that their challenges shape the solutions. While still in early stages, this project represents a bold step toward tackling food insecurity at the grassroots level.
2. Empowering Women Entrepreneurs in the Digital Age
The digital revolution has already changed how the world does business. Yet, too many African women entrepreneurs remain excluded—lacking access to technology or the skills to use it effectively.
Through a partnership with ImpactHER Foundation, Safina Empowerment is bridging this gap by training 1,000 women-owned SMEs in essential digital business skills. This goes beyond basic computer use—it’s about mastering online marketing, e-commerce, and digital financial tools.
By equipping women with these skills, we are ensuring that they are not left behind in the age of AI and automation, but instead thrive as leaders in the digital economy.
3. Sustainable Homesteads Through Agroforestry
In the South Rift, Safina Empowerment is working with farming families—especially women homesteaders—to build sustainable, climate-resilient livelihoods.
This initiative focuses on:
Restoring soil health with organic practices.
Conserving water through efficient irrigation and mulching.
Integrating fruit trees into homesteads, boosting biodiversity and food security.
Sharing knowledge through workshops and farmer-to-farmer learning.
Already, over 1,600 people have been impacted, proving that grassroots climate action can transform entire communities.
4. The GreenRift Empowerment Project
What started as a student-led tree planting campaign has grown into a full movement of youth-led conservation and empowerment. Through GreenRift, we aim to:
Plant 3,000 trees across the Rift Valley.
Train 200 young people—100 girls and 100 boys—in conservation skills.
Reach 10 schools with environmental education and tree planting drives.
We see every tree planted, every student engaged, as a seed of hope for the future.
At Safina Empowerment, we are driven by one belief: a just, sustainable world is possible when communities are not only included, but empowered. From farmers in the Rift Valley to women entrepreneurs in cities, we walk with them—because their journey is our journey.
Every contribution, whether in expertise, resources, or financial support, helps us take these initiatives further. Together, we can dismantle barriers and create a world where no community is left behind.
