OVERVIEW

School in Slum Africa was born from lived experience, from a childhood shaped by poverty, resilience, and a grandmother who believed that education could rewrite a child’s destiny. That belief became the foundation of our mission: to ensure that children in slums and remote communities have access to quality education and the basic tools they need to thrive.

Our Exam Relief Package is the first structured outreach under this vision. It focuses on supporting children during exam seasons, a time when poverty often decides who gets to sit for their exams and who stays home. By providing essential materials like math sets, notebooks, and pens, along with light refreshments, we aim to remove the small but painful barriers that keep children from learning with dignity and focus. What began as a self-funded act of compassion has grown into an organised effort to ensure that every child has the chance to show up, participate, and succeed.

CURRENT CHALLENGES

Access to education in Nigeria remains one of the country’s greatest inequalities. Millions of children are in school but not learning effectively, simply because they lack basic materials or motivation. During our ongoing school survey, conducted directly with teachers in slum and remote areas, the findings have been both overwhelming and heartbreaking. We’ve discovered that:

  1. Many children share one exercise book for multiple subjects.
  2. Some attend classes daily without writing materials or proper uniforms.
  3. In certain schools, teachers personally buy supplies for students who have nothing.

These realities make it clear that educational inequality isn’t just about infrastructure; it’s about access to the smallest essentials that enable learning.

So far, most of our outreach has been personally funded, but the data we’ve gathered is helping us plan a more targeted, sustainable response for future interventions.

OUR APPROACH

At School in Slum Africa, we take a data-informed, community-driven approach to every initiative. Needs Assessment: We work directly with teachers to identify children who lack school materials, ensuring support reaches the most affected students.

Direct Support: Through the Exam Relief Package, we provide writing tools, math sets, and light refreshments to help students prepare and perform well during exams.

Recognition and Motivation: Outstanding students are recognised, not only to celebrate their efforts but also to inspire their peers.

Advocacy and Sensitisation: We engage students and community members on the value of education, especially for girls, reinforcing the idea that learning is a right, not a privilege.

Our strength lies in our grassroots connection. We know the communities, we know the schools, and we understand their challenges. Every step we take is designed to make an immediate difference while laying the groundwork for lasting change.

LONG-TERM IMPACT

The Exam Relief Package is just the beginning of a broader vision to build an ecosystem where every child, regardless of background, has access to quality education.

In the long term, we aim to:

  1. Use data from our ongoing survey to develop a Child Education Support Index that maps the most underserved schools and students.
  2. Establish partnerships with local educators, NGOs, and corporate supporters to scale our impact.
  3. Improve school attendance and exam participation rates, especially among girls.
  4. Expand our outreach to include mentorship and life skills programs for sustainable empowerment.

We are building carefully, with transparency and integrity, knowing that true impact isn’t measured by how fast you grow, but by how deeply you serve.

At School in Slum Africa, we believe that education is more than access to classrooms; it’s access to possibility, peace, and purpose.

Every pencil, every notebook, and every opportunity we give brings us closer to the future we’re working for, one where no child is left behind because of where they were born.
