Selenium for Skin Cancer Protection?



There’s no food or pill that can prevent skin cancer. The best advice is to limit time in the sun and wear protective clothing and sunscreen when outside. But a new study from Australia suggests that selenium may be somewhat protective. It found that people with the highest blood levels of this essential trace mineral had about a 60% reduced risk of both basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas (two common forms of skin cancer).



The study doesn’t prove that selenium decreases skin cancer risk (other unknown factors may be responsible for the observation). But it offers more incentive to eat foods rich in selenium, such as whole grains, nuts (particularly Brazil nuts), and seafood. Multivitamin/mineral supplements typically provide 20 to 200 micrograms (the RDA for adults/teens is 55 mcg). Read more
