She Carries the World Quietly

A vitreous woman

This morning in Nigeria, before the sun fully rises and before the streets begin to roar with buses and traders, a woman is already awake.

She ties her wrapper firmly around her waist and walks softly through the house so she doesn’t wake everyone too soon. The kettle goes on the stove. The smell of tea and pap slowly fills the small kitchen. Outside, the first sounds of the neighborhood begin with a rooster crowing somewhere far away, a neighbor sweeping the dusty compound with a broom made of dry palm fronds.

This is how many Nigerian women begin their day.

Not with applause Nor with celebration., But with quiet sacrifice.

She prepares food, arranges school uniforms, reminds a sleepy child to hurry up before the bus leaves. She carries responsibilities the way she carries a bowl on her head balanced, steady, even when the road is rough.

Then the day truly begins.

She boards a crowded bus, stands in the market for hours, works in an office, teaches in a classroom, or runs a small stall under the hot sun. She negotiates prices, solves problems, stretches little money into something that can feed a whole family.Yet when evening comes, her work is still not finished. She returns home tired, but the home still waits for her hands cooking, cleaning, helping with homework, listening to worries, offering comfort. Sometimes she eats last, after everyone else has been satisfied.

And still, she smiles.

Because being a woman here often means becoming the silent strength of many lives. Women know sacrifice in ways the world does not always see. They pray fiercely for their families. They fast quietly for the future of their children. They carry pain without announcing it, and still find a way to give love.Sometimes their dreams wait.Sometimes their rest waits. But their courage never does.

Today, I celebrate the women of this land the mothers, daughters, sisters, and dreamers who carry so much and ask for so little.

Women who wake before dawn who keep families standing whose sacrifices build the future, one quiet day at a time.

Because in this country, in homes across every street and village, there is a woman somewhere carrying the world quietly, and still finding the strength to keep walking.
