Teenage Well Project in Lagos School by Motherhood NG Initiative

At Motherhood NG Initiative, we don’t start projects just because they’re trendy or convenient; every single one is born from what we see and feel in the communities we serve.
A few years ago, as we were moving from one settlement to another with Project Safe Birth, we met too many young girls, teenagers, already pregnant, unprepared, and left alone. Some didn’t even know what a safe pregnancy looked like, let alone a safe delivery. It broke my heart to see that many of these teenage mothers were part of the alarming statistics we talk about every day:
Nigeria contributes about 10% of the world’s maternal deaths, despite having only 2.4% of the global population. (Source: WHO, UNICEF).
Teenage pregnancies account for about 19% of maternal deaths in Nigeria. (Source: National Demographic and Health Survey, NDHS 2018).
And period poverty is real: 1 in 10 girls miss school during their period because they cannot afford pads. (Source: UNESCO, UNICEF).
This means a girl child loses 20% of her school year, putting her at risk of dropping out and marrying too early.
Standing in those communities, we knew the root causes were bigger than the lack of safe birth kits alone. We needed to tackle what pushes girls into unsafe sex, early pregnancy, and shame about their bodies. So, Teenage Well Project was born.
Over the last two years, we have reached over 10,000 schoolgirls and community girls in 4 states across Nigeria, sharing free pads, teaching practical menstrual hygiene, busting myths, providing sex education, and guiding them about their rights and dreams. We’ve trained teachers, parents, and community leaders to talk openly about periods and puberty.
Every pad we give, every myth we break, every girl we help stay in school, it’s all connected to our fight to reduce maternal deaths in Nigeria.
At Motherhood NG Initiative, we know this is how we break the cycle: educate her early, support her body, protect her future.
We’re here, and we’re not stopping.
If this moves you, I invite you to stand with us, because solving problems at the root is how we save lives. 💜
