Sometimes the Best Move is a Step Back

“…Sometimes going back and finding another route is the best option.” — African Proverb

I’ve learned this truth in ways both subtle and profound throughout my career. As professionals, we are often conditioned to equate perseverance with forward momentum. “Keep pushing, never quit, always go forward,” society seems to whisper. But here’s the reality: refusing to give up does not automatically mean we will succeed.

Sometimes, resilience isn’t about charging ahead blindly. It’s about pausing, reflecting, and daring to take a step back to reassess. It’s about recognizing when the path you’re on isn’t serving you—or your team, or your goals—and having the courage to pivot.

In professional life, this could mean changing a strategy that isn’t working, reconsidering an approach to a challenging project, or even taking a career pause to gain perspective. These moments, though they may feel like setbacks, are often the gateways to clarity, innovation, and renewed energy.

Mental health and well-being play a critical role here. Constantly pushing forward despite burnout, anxiety, or stress doesn’t just hurt performance—it erodes our sense of purpose and fulfillment. By embracing the idea of “stepping back to move forward,” we protect our mental health while positioning ourselves for more sustainable success.

I’ve personally experienced the relief and growth that comes from this mindset. A project I had poured months into wasn’t yielding results, despite my persistence. The instinct to keep pushing was strong, but I allowed myself to pause, regroup, and explore an alternative approach. Not only did the project eventually succeed, but I also discovered a more effective method, built stronger relationships with colleagues, and learned more about my own limits and capabilities.

The lesson is simple yet profound: courage isn’t only about pushing ahead. True courage sometimes lies in stepping back, re-evaluating, and choosing a different route with intention. Our professional journeys—and our mental health—benefit when we honour that process.

Next time you face a wall, consider this: maybe the path isn’t blocked—it’s redirecting you toward something even more meaningful.
