Strong Every Day: Reclaiming Confidence, One Game at a Time

We stood on a dusty field in Kaduna, watching 35 girls laugh, run, and chant, “We play strong, every day of the month!” It was more than a game. It was a revolution in motion.
These girls are not just players. They are survivors. Many of them come from low-income communities and IDP camps, where insecurity, poverty, and silence around menstruation shape their daily lives. For some, periods have meant missing school, shame, and isolation. For others, it meant dropping out entirely.
But on this day, as part of our Play and Excel initiative, we held our first Sport & Period Positivity Day, a celebration that combined fun, learning, and liberation. Together, we broke period myths, shared personal stories, and played football like champions. Each girl received a hygiene kit, created a “Period Proud” headband, and stood boldly in her power.
We watched one girl, Zainab, who had once been too shy to speak about her body, lead a team chant with pride. Another, Ruth, shared how this was the first time she had ever heard someone say that periods are not something to hide.
This day reminded me why I started this work, because girls deserve to be seen, heard, and supported, not just in classrooms, but in the fields, in circles of trust, and in every space where their dignity matters.
We may not change everything overnight. But every kick of the ball, every open conversation, every shared pad is a step toward breaking shame and building resilience.
To everyone out there fighting for dignity, for equity, for a voice, keep going. We are building something beautiful, one brave girl at a time.
