The Energy They Can't Understand
I’ve been thinking a lot about how the way we carry ourselves—our energy, confidence, and authenticity—can trigger reactions in others that we don’t always anticipate. There’s an African proverb that goes something like this: People will be jealous of your personality, your energy, your confidence, and the way other people love you. It doesn’t have anything to do with material things.
And it’s true. In professional spaces, we often assume envy or pushback comes from what we own, our titles, or our achievements. But more often, it’s our presence—our unshakable belief in ourselves, the way we carry integrity, and the calm determination to grow—that makes others uncomfortable.
I’ve noticed that when I show up fully—authentically, energetically, confidently—I encounter two kinds of people: those inspired and those threatened. And both reactions are natural. The challenge is not letting the latter disrupt your mental and emotional balance. As professionals, we’re under constant pressure to perform, to lead, and to innovate. Protecting our mental health is about creating boundaries around the energy we allow to influence us.
This is why self-awareness and resilience matter. When we understand that reactions from others are rarely about us, we reduce stress, avoid unnecessary self-doubt, and protect our inner equilibrium. Mental health at work is about more than therapy or meditation; it’s also about maintaining a mindset where external judgments don’t dictate our self-worth or confidence.
I remind myself often: the power of presence isn’t just charisma—it’s a form of self-respect, a mental shield, and a commitment to keep showing up as the best version of myself. That energy, confidence, and authenticity are not just traits—they are a lifeline for staying mentally and emotionally resilient in challenging environments.
So, if you find people questioning or critiquing you, remember: it’s not about what you have, it’s about who you are. Keep cultivating that confidence, that energy, and that authenticity. Guard it, nurture it, and let it inspire the right people while strengthening your own mental fortitude.
