The Gate That Isn’t There – A Lesson on Mental Barriers

There’s an African proverb that says, “The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth.” I often think of this when reflecting on how we, as adults, sometimes create invisible barriers around ourselves — not because they’re real, but because we’ve learned to live within them.

Recently, I came across a picture of a sheep stuck behind a gate — yet there was no fence on either side. The animal had space to move, but it stood still, fixated on the gate as if it were trapped. It hit me hard. How many of us do the same in life or at work?

We stay stuck in jobs that drain us, routines that no longer serve us, or self-beliefs that whisper, “You can’t.” We convince ourselves that progress is blocked, when in truth, the way forward has always been open — just not in the direction we keep staring.

In professional life, this “mental gate” often looks like imposter syndrome, burnout, fear of failure, or over-attachment to comfort zones. We tell ourselves, “This is just how things are,” and settle for less than we’re capable of. But sometimes, growth demands that we move sideways — to step out, not necessarily forward, and see things differently.

That’s where mental health and self-awareness intersect powerfully with professional development. Reassessing your path, asking for help, or changing direction is not a sign of weakness. It’s clarity. It’s strength.

If you’ve been feeling “stuck” lately — whether in your role, your goals, or your own head — maybe it’s time to stop pushing against the gate. Step back. Look around. The path to freedom and fulfillment may not be blocked at all — it might just be waiting for you to notice.

The fence was never there.
