The Goose, the Bucket, and the Unexpected Wisdom

There’s an old story about Farmer Joe from Maple Creek that I can’t help but smile at every time I hear it. One day, his truck broke down, so he decided to walk home. On his way, he picked up a bucket and some paint from the hardware store, and then two chickens and a goose from the feed shop.

By the time he was ready to head home, he was completely loaded down. Then, as fate would have it, he met Widow Martha — a sweet, elderly lady who was lost and needed directions.

Joe wanted to help, but he was stuck with full hands. Martha, however, quickly offered a solution: “Put the paint in the bucket, carry that in one hand, tuck a chicken under each arm, and carry the goose in the other.”

Problem solved.

But halfway down the road, when Joe suggested taking a shortcut through an alley, Martha stopped and said, “Now listen, Farmer Joe. I’m a lonely widow. How do I know you won’t push me against the wall and take advantage of me?”

Joe burst out laughing. “Lady, I’m carrying a bucket, a gallon of paint, two chickens, and a goose! How could I possibly do that?”

Without missing a beat, Martha replied, “Set the goose down, cover him with the bucket, put the paint on top — and I’ll hold the chickens.”

What a moment of wit — but also, what a lesson.

It reminds me how, in life and work, people carry their own buckets, paint, chickens, and geese. We’re all juggling responsibilities, stressors, and expectations — often trying to keep everything from toppling over. And sometimes, amid the weight of it all, we forget that others might be carrying their own heavy loads too.

Mental health, especially in high-performing environments, is often about balance and empathy. Knowing when to lend a hand — or simply a kind word — to someone who’s overwhelmed. It’s also about recognizing when you’re the one overloaded, and it’s okay to pause, ask for help, or even put something down for a while.

Martha’s cheeky wisdom reminds us that perspective, humour, and connection can lighten even the heaviest burdens. Sometimes, it’s not about fixing everything — it’s about walking alongside someone, sharing the load, and finding laughter in life’s absurdities.

Because truthfully, we’re all just trying to carry our buckets, chickens, and geese home safely.
