The Grace to Rise Again

There’s an African proverb that says: “Nobody's perfect. We make mistakes. We say wrong things. We do wrong things. We fall. We get up. We learn. We grow. We move on. We live.”

Every time I read that, I’m reminded how deeply human it is to stumble—and how courageous it is to rise. In professional spaces, we often celebrate success stories and polished results, yet shy away from the messy middle—the setbacks, misjudgements, and quiet recoveries that shape our resilience.

I’ve had my share of both wins and wounds. Times I made the wrong call, missed an opportunity, or spoke too soon. And for a while, I carried the shame of imperfection like a hidden scar. But healing began when I understood that mistakes aren’t moral failures; they’re feedback. They reveal where growth is waiting.

In mental health terms, this is self-compassion in action—the ability to treat ourselves with the same understanding we’d extend to a friend who’s struggling. When we learn to forgive ourselves, we unlock emotional energy to try again. And when we normalize that truth at work, we create psychological safety—a culture where people can admit missteps without fear, learn openly, and innovate boldly.

Perfection is overrated. Progress is real. The people who grow are not the ones who never fall, but those who keep standing up with renewed purpose. So, whether you’re leading a team, managing a business, or rebuilding after a personal storm—give yourself grace. You’re still becoming.

The journey continues.

We fall. We rise. We live.
