The Mirror of Truth
In a quiet village nestled between rolling hills, there lived a wise old woman named Mariam. She was known for her deep insight and kindness, and villagers often sought her guidance in times of trouble. In the village, a boy named Youssef was quick to judge others. He mocked a neighbor for her untidy garden, criticized a classmate for his poor handwriting, and laughed at a farmer’s small harvest.
One day, Mariam heard about Youssef’s behavior. She invited him to her home for tea. When he arrived, she greeted him warmly and handed him a dusty, old mirror.
“Do you see this mirror, Youssef?” she asked.
“Yes, but it’s old and blurry,” he replied, frowning.
“Exactly,” Mariam said with a smile. “This is the Mirror of Truth. It reflects not only your face but also your soul. It will help you understand something very important.”
Youssef looked into the mirror and saw his reflection, but it was clouded and distorted. “Why does it look like this?” he asked.
“The mirror shows you what is hidden in your heart,” Mariam explained. “When you criticize others without understanding their struggles, your own faults become harder to see. Try cleaning the mirror.”
Youssef grabbed a cloth and began wiping the mirror. As he cleaned, Mariam spoke gently. “Every time you judge someone, ask yourself: Am I perfect? Do I understand what they are going through? What would I do in their place?”
The more Youssef wiped, the clearer his reflection became. He noticed something surprising—his face looked kinder and more thoughtful.
Mariam handed him a cup of tea. “Youssef, life is like this mirror. When you stop judging others and focus on understanding yourself, you begin to see clearly. Self-evaluation is the first step to true wisdom.
From that day on, Youssef began to think before he spoke. He learned that the farmer’s small harvest was due to a storm, the untidy garden belonged to an elderly woman who couldn’t work as she used to, and the classmate with poor handwriting was trying his best despite an injured hand..
Years later, Youssef became a wise man, much like Mariam, teaching others the lesson he had learned from the Mirror of Truth: Before judging others, look deeply into yourself. Only then can you truly understand and help those around you.
