The Missing Backyard

Before colonization, Nigerians have three elements present in home building; a backyard for vegetable garden, a play yard with fruit trees standing in the compound like a centerpiece, domestic animals.

Western urbanization has now, replaced these essential home elements with a fence, a gateman house, and a towering borehole water tank as the centerpiece.

These removals and replacements have partly broken down our unique bond, our values, and our collective sense of community ownership; weakening our community security, food security, health security, social and mental security.

SafeSide is advocating that some of these elements be reincorporated in our urbanization model.
