The Power of Lifting Others as You Rise

There’s an African proverb that says, “Greatness is not measured by how high we climb, but by how many lives we lift as we rise.” Those words have stayed with me for years, shaping how I view success, leadership, and even personal growth.

In our professional journeys, it’s easy to focus solely on milestones—titles, recognition, promotions, and measurable achievements. Yet, the truest mark of progress isn’t always in how far we go, but in how many people feel seen, supported, and strengthened because of our presence along the way.

Every challenge we face at work—tight deadlines, difficult clients, or uncertain transitions—offers us two paths: to harden or to deepen. I’ve learned that choosing to deepen—our empathy, our patience, our connection—transforms adversity into influence. It builds a kind of resilience that not only helps us rise again after a fall, but also equips us to lift others when they stumble.

This idea connects deeply with mental health in the workplace. Burnout and emotional fatigue often come when we feel isolated in our struggles or disconnected from purpose. When we shift focus from “How do I survive this?” to “How can we grow through this together?”, we invite meaning back into the equation. Lifting others doesn’t drain us—it sustains us. It creates a culture of mutual resilience, where compassion becomes the currency of collaboration.

I’ve seen teams thrive not because they had the most brilliant individuals, but because they had leaders who cared, peers who checked in, and cultures that celebrated small victories. That’s the power of lifting others—it makes greatness a shared experience, not a lonely pursuit.

So today, if you’re climbing, look around. Who can you pull up with you? Whose load can you lighten? Because real strength isn’t about standing taller than others—it’s about standing with them.

Let’s make resilience contagious.
