Our voices matter. They are not just words spoken or written, they carry our experiences, struggles, and hopes. In a world where so many voices go unheard, I believe that honoring each person’s voice is a responsibility, not a choice. That’s why the World Pulse ethical value of Voice resonates deeply with me.
Valuing someone’s voice means respecting their right to decide what they share, how they share it, and when they share it. It’s about informed consent, not just as a one-time checkbox but as an ongoing process. Too often, people’s stories are taken out of context, used without their permission, or manipulated to fit a narrative. This is why true consent must be actively given and continuously affirmed. It also means recognizing the time and emotional labor behind these stories. If someone is sharing their lived experience to contribute to research or evaluation, their effort should be acknowledged, whether through credit, compensation, or genuine appreciation.
But voice alone is not enough. It must lead to Change. Sharing stories and experiences should not just be about awareness; it should push for action. Research and evaluation should have a clear purpose: to create meaningful impact. If we are asked to participate in a study, we deserve to know how our voices will be used to drive change. Will the findings be shared with leaders? Will they influence policies? Will they help shape better opportunities for our communities? These are the questions I would ask a researcher to see if they are truly living by this value.
For me, Change means more than just publishing reports. It means making sure those reports reach the right hands, the people who have the power to turn insights into action. It means ensuring that the communities involved in research are also part of the conversation when solutions are being designed. Our stories should not just be told; they should be the force that shapes a better future.
This is why I stand by these two ethical values. Voice and Change go hand in hand. If we truly listen, honor, and amplify voices, we can create the change we all deserve.
