The Ramadan Lanterns of Mogadishu

The streets of Mogadishu were alive with the spirit of Ramadan. From Hamar Weyne to Hodan, the scent of sambuus and shaah filled the air as families prepared for iftar. In every neighborhood, lanterns hung from doorways, casting a warm glow over the city as the call to Maghrib prayer echoed through the minarets.

Fourteen-year-old Bilal sat on the rooftop of his home, watching the city transform under the night sky. This Ramadan was special for him—it was the first time he was fasting for the entire month without missing a day. His mother had promised him a gift if he completed the fast, but to Bilal, the real reward was the sense of pride he felt.

Downstairs, his mother, Ayaan, was setting the iftar table. Life in Mogadishu had not always been easy, but Ramadan brought a sense of peace and togetherness that nothing else could. She remembered her own childhood, when the streets would be filled with children carrying small lanterns, singing Ramadan songs as they visited neighbors.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, Bilal’s father, Abdi, entered the house with a warm smile. He had spent the afternoon at the mosque, helping distribute food to those in need. "Tonight, we will visit the old mosque near Lido Beach for Taraweeh prayers," he told Bilal.

After iftar, the family walked through the streets, where vendors sold fresh juice and sweets. The sound of children laughing, the sight of elders exchanging prayers, and the feeling of unity filled the air. At the mosque, Bilal stood beside his father, listening to the Imam’s recitation of the Qur’an.

As he bowed in prayer, he realized that Ramadan was more than just fasting—it was about gratitude, about community, and about the light that shone even in the darkest of times.

That night, as he lay in bed, he whispered a prayer: that the lanterns of Mogadishu would always shine, bringing hope and blessings to his beloved city.
