Not having much money never deterred my mother, the daughter of Bigmama, from pushing me in directions that I opposed at first. But my opposition mattered not to either of those women when it came to doing something they considered a worthwhile endeavor, not only for me, but for themselves, as well.

"You're doing this," my mother said. "You can say how much you hate it afterwards." Usually, after trying her well-planned, new-fangled idea, I saw the merit in it.
