The Value of Unseen Contributions
In many African homes, we grow up hearing proverbs that carry more wisdom than most textbooks ever could. One that’s stayed with me reminds us that not everyone gives the same way — and that’s perfectly okay.
Some family members can’t contribute financially to weddings, graduations, or funerals. But they give through service, presence, and love. There’s that uncle who doesn’t give money but ensures the cow is slaughtered properly. The auntie who cleans the pots until they shine. The brother who rallies his friends to pull your car from the mud when it rains. Or the sister who takes your crying child out for a short walk so you can rest.
Their hands speak the language of love. Their actions whisper, “I’m here, even if my pocket isn’t full.”
In professional spaces, this truth resonates deeply. Not everyone shines in meetings or dominates presentations. Some people keep the culture alive — the colleague who brings humour to tense moments, the team member who stays late to help others meet deadlines, or the quiet one who remembers everyone’s birthdays.
Yet, in our fast-paced, performance-driven environments, we sometimes measure worth only in visible output — deliverables, targets, numbers. When we do, we risk undermining the quieter forms of contribution that keep teams emotionally healthy and resilient.
This connects directly to mental health at work. Recognition and belonging are key to well-being. When people feel unseen or undervalued because their contributions don’t fit the traditional mold, it chips away at self-worth and fuels burnout. True leadership means seeing beyond the spreadsheet — valuing empathy, reliability, and effort just as much as results.
Let’s learn to respect the diversity of giving — both in families and workplaces. Everyone adds something. Some give through ideas, others through action. Some offer laughter, others quiet stability. When we embrace that truth, we not only build stronger teams but also healthier hearts.
Respect, after all, is the purest form of love — and love, the greatest form of contribution.
