The Weight We Carry — and How We Carry It
There’s a timeless African proverb that says, “It is not the load that breaks you down, but the way you carry it.”
Over the years, I’ve come to realise that this simple truth captures one of the most profound lessons about resilience, leadership, and mental well-being.
In our lives, we all carry loads — deadlines, expectations, ambitions, and sometimes the invisible weight of emotional fatigue. The problem is rarely the “load” itself. It’s how we internalise it, how we pace ourselves, and how we allow it to shape our sense of worth.
There was a time I thought strength meant doing it all — showing up no matter how exhausted I was, never saying no, never asking for help. But that kind of “strength” is deceptive. It glorifies burnout and confuses endurance with resilience. Real strength, I’ve learned, is knowing when to pause, when to delegate, and when to breathe.
In mental health terms, this proverb is a reminder about emotional regulation and self-compassion. It challenges the mindset that says, “I must carry this alone.” Whether you’re a healthcare worker managing compassion fatigue, an entrepreneur juggling uncertainty, or a corporate leader navigating team pressures — it’s the way you carry your responsibilities that determines whether they refine or break you.
Sometimes, the shift is as simple as reframing:
- Instead of asking, “Why is this happening to me?” ask, “How can I grow through this?”
- Instead of seeing the load as punishment, view it as preparation.
We all need systems of support — mentors, colleagues, therapy, faith, family — whatever helps you balance the load. Because resilience isn’t about carrying more; it’s about carrying better.
So today, check your posture. Not the physical one, but your mental posture. Are you carrying your load with grace, or with silent struggle?
Because in the end, the load isn’t what defines us — it’s the way we carry it.
