The Weight We Carry, The Hope We Find

I used to believe that when a person gave up on their dreams, or even on their own life, it was simply because they didn’t love themselves enough. I thought maybe they lacked strength, or maybe they just didn’t want to fight for what mattered.

But then… life happened to me.

I hit rock bottom. My finances crumbled. My life took a turn I never expected. And the worst blow of all — my child was chased from school because I couldn’t pay her fees.

I’ll never forget the way she looked at me that morning, her innocent eyes filled with questions I had no answers to. She asked me, “Mommy, will I be allowed in class today?”

That question pierced my soul. I felt every ounce of failure a mother could feel. The pain was unbearable. I wanted to hide, to disappear, because I couldn’t give her the one thing she deserved — a chance at education, a future brighter than mine.

It was in that moment I realized something: when people give up, it’s not always because they don’t care or because they are selfish. Sometimes the weight of the world presses so heavily on their shoulders that they can no longer see the light. Sometimes despair whispers louder than hope.

But I also realized something else: what about the people who love us? What about the children who look up to us, the families who need us, the friends who would be left broken? Sometimes, even when we can’t find a reason for ourselves, we have to hold on for them.

Life will test you. Life will break you down. There will be days when you feel stuck, helpless, and invisible. But no storm lasts forever. This too shall pass.

So if you are reading this and you are in your own storm — please don’t give up. Please don’t think you are alone. Someone loves you. Someone needs you. Someone would miss you more than you could ever imagine.

And for the rest of us: let’s be kinder. Let’s love one another more deeply. If you can help, even in the smallest way, do it. Don’t wait until it’s too late to show compassion. You never know — your act of kindness could be the reason someone chooses to keep living, to keep fighting, to keep believing that tomorrow will be better.

Because tomorrow can be better. And tomorrow will be better.
