The Wisdom in the Last Chance
There’s an African proverb that says, “We never really learn from the first mistake, second or third. It only hits us when we’re given the last chance.”
That line hits differently the older I get. It’s raw, real, and deeply human. We like to think that growth happens with every stumble — that we pick ourselves up, learn our lesson, and move on. But truthfully, many of us only start listening when the consequences are loud enough to silence our excuses.
In my journey, both personally and professionally, I’ve come to realize that “the last chance” moments are often disguised as breakdowns — a lost opportunity, a failed relationship, a health scare, or burnout that forces us to stop and re-evaluate everything. These moments strip away our illusions of control and remind us that change is not just desirable — it’s necessary.
In the workplace, especially among professionals juggling ambition, pressure, and performance metrics, this proverb speaks to something deeper — mental and emotional awareness. We often postpone rest, delay reflection, and ignore warning signs until we hit that last chance: a collapse in motivation, a mental health crisis, or the quiet quitting of our own spirit.
The truth is, lessons don’t fully sink in until they cost us something we value. That’s when we finally pause long enough to listen — not to the noise of our goals, but to the whisper of our own well-being.
So here’s my gentle nudge: don’t wait for the last chance to become self-aware. Notice the patterns. Address the fatigue. Admit the fear. Learn early, heal often. Because wisdom doesn’t just live in failure — it lives in our willingness to confront it before it breaks us.
Your “last chance” might just be the beginning of your best chapter — if you choose to pay attention now.
