🌱 In the heart of Ile-Ife, Osun State, a transformative initiative is quietly reshaping the future for children with developmental challenges. The Early Childhood Development (ECD) Center at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) is a beacon of hope for families, offering early detection, timely intervention, and holistic care for young children facing developmental delays.

Why Early Childhood Development Matters

For many families in Nigeria, developmental delays in children are often detected too late, resulting in missed opportunities for crucial early support. The ECD Center at OAUTHC is changing that narrative by integrating early developmental screening into routine child health services—empowering parents and health workers alike.

Established in collaboration with the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) and funded by the UK Department of Health and Social Care, the center focuses on capacity building, early screening, and family-centered support for children aged 0–5 years.

A Multidisciplinary Approach to Care

The ECD Center offers an impressive array of services delivered by a dedicated team of pediatricians, physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and dietitians. This collaborative model ensures every child receives the personalized care they need to thrive.

Screening tools like the Malawi Development Assessment Tool (MDAT) and the Ibadan Simplified Developmental Screening Tool are used to identify developmental delays as early as six months old. These tools have been integrated into immunization cards, making early detection both accessible and routine.

Supporting Families Through ā€œBaby Ubuntuā€

Recognizing that developmental care is incomplete without family support, the ECD Center also runs the Baby Ubuntu program—a structured group-based intervention that equips caregivers with practical knowledge and emotional support. Through these sessions, parents learn essential skills like feeding techniques and positioning, leading to noticeable improvements in their children’s development and quality of life.

A Model for Replication

The success of the ECD Center in Ile-Ife is already inspiring discussions about replicating the model in other regions. By combining medical expertise with community-driven support, the center is not just treating children—it’s empowering families, building awareness, and laying a foundation for inclusive child development in Nigeria.
