GBV is a Reality
🌍
As I sit down to write this, I'm filled with a mix of emotions—fear, anxiety, but also a sense of liberation. For years, I carried the weight of my story, afraid to share it with the world. But today, I choose to break my silence. I am a psychiatrist, mental health expert, and advocate. My work is dedicated to advancing women's mental health, promoting wellness, and raising awareness. I am passionate about empowering women through education, healthcare, and inclusivity, with a special focus on promoting sexual wellness. I am also a survivor of gender-based violence (GBV). My story is one of pain and struggle, but also of resilience and hope.
The narrative of GBV is often relegated to the shadows, but I believe it's time to bring it to the forefront. Growing up, I was taught to be strong and brave, yet in the midst of GBV, I felt powerless and lost my voice and agency. As I navigated the darkest moments of my life, I realized I was not alone. The stories of countless others who faced similar struggles gave me the courage to share my own. Today, I am not just a survivor; I am a warrior. I am a voice for those who have been silenced and marginalized. My story is a reminder that GBV is a reality that affects us all, regardless of our backgrounds or genders.
My journey has been met with skepticism, doubt, and victim-blaming. But I was also met with kindness, compassion, and empathy. These moments of kindness give me hope. Hope that one day, we’ll live in a world where GBV is a distant memory. Hope that we'll create a society that is inclusive, equitable, and just. And hope that we’ll amplify the voices of survivors, rather than silencing them. That day starts today. It starts with our collective willingness to listen, to empathize, and to act. It is time to break our silence and shatter the stigma surrounding GBV. We owe it to ourselves and to future generations to create a world where survivors are heard, believed, and supported.
A New Narrative: Flip the Script
It is time to "Flip the Script" on outdated narratives about men and women. This means consciously changing how we talk about masculinity and gender roles. Instead of seeing men as dominant or women as submissive, we can create a new narrative where men are empathetic, supportive, and fully equal partners. It’s time to embrace a richer, more diverse understanding of what masculinity can be.
To help us Flip the Script and guide our actions, we must:
* Foster healthy masculinity in boys and men: Encourage traits like empathy, kindness, and emotional intelligence.
* Stand in solidarity with survivors and advocates: Offer support and amplify the voices of those affected by gender-based discrimination.
* Lead by example: Promote positive male role models that demonstrate what it means to be a respectful, egalitarian man.
* Create a culture of healthy masculinity: Build environments where positive male attributes are celebrated.
* Involve men as allies in preventing Intimate Partner Violence (IPV): Recognize their crucial role in stopping violence.
* Raise boys and men to respect and value equality: Instill these principles from a young age.
* Practice self-reflection and accountability: Honestly examine personal biases and take responsibility for actions.
* Inspire a movement of men working to end IPV: Mobilize collective action against violence.
* Teach healthy relationship skills and respect: Equip everyone with the tools for respectful and balanced connections.
* Partner with women and marginalized communities: Work together for broader social transformation.
* Honor women's autonomy and decision-making: Respect their right to choose and control their own lives.
* Transform toxic masculinity into healthy, positive masculinity: Shift away from harmful stereotypes towards constructive expressions of manhood.
* Empower men to challenge patriarchal norms: Encourage them to speak out against outdated, limiting ideas about gender.
Engaging men as allies is super important for achieving genuine gender equality. Men often hold positions of power, and their support can make women’s voices louder and help change unfair systems. When men and women work together, they can challenge harmful gender norms, build healthier relationships, and create a more just society for everyone.
Today After going through DV despite being a Psychiatrist,& privileged who had support of the family ,I.have healed myself & tell my story to encourage others ,give courage to women to break the silence - more than talking about my story & sufferings,I want to talk more about how to bring the change & give courage to break the silence .
I Imagine a world where Men & Women respectfully coexist and noone has to suffer from violence & pain .Also where Men are coming and talking about gender equality instead of women crying.
