Unconscious bias

Unconscious bias refers to the automatic and unintentional judgments we make about people based on factors like race, gender, age, or background, shaped by our experiences and societal influences. It often operates beneath our awareness, yet it can have a profound impact on decision-making, relationships, and opportunities. Understanding unconscious bias requires self-awareness, continuous learning, and a willingness to challenge our assumptions.

I have encountered unconscious bias in various forms, particularly in the fields of art and science. As a young woman pursuing neuroscience and technology while also being a professional artist, I have noticed that people often assume that one cannot excel in both science and the arts. There’s an implicit bias that if someone is scientifically inclined, they must not be creative, or vice versa. I have also experienced gender bias, where my ideas were sometimes overlooked in male-dominated discussions until I asserted myself more strongly.

To deal with unconscious bias, I focus on awareness and education—both for myself and for those around me. I challenge stereotypes by proving through action that art and science are deeply connected, and I use my achievements to break preconceived notions about what a young woman can accomplish. Additionally, I engage in conversations about bias, helping others recognize their assumptions while also keeping myself open to feedback about my own unconscious biases.

In mentoring and leadership, addressing unconscious bias is crucial. I believe in fostering inclusive environments where everyone’s perspectives are valued. By actively listening, questioning my assumptions, and promoting diverse voices, I aim to contribute to a culture that encourages fairness, empathy, and growth.
