Using AI to Close the Menstrual Knowledge Gap: How Ms. Flow Was Born

This year, as the world celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child, I’m proud to share a story close to my heart, the birth of Ms. Flow, an AI-powered WhatsApp I built to bridge the menstrual knowledge gap for teenage girls in Nigeria.

The Problem I Saw

SINCE we started Teenage Well Project outreaches at Motherhood NG Initiative three years ago, I have met several young girls who whispered their questions about menstruation, often filled with fear, shame, or myths.

It became clear that while physical access to sanitary materials is crucial, knowledge access is just as essential.

For many girls in underserved communities, there is no safe space to ask questions about their bodies. When education is driven by myths or fear, confidence and dignity suffer.

The Idea

I asked myself one simple question:

What if we could use something girls already have — a phone and WhatsApp — to provide safe, accurate, and empowering menstrual education? They can access WhatsApp through their parent' phones.

That’s how Ms. Flow was born — a friendly, accessible AI chatbot that:

Answers real-time menstrual health questions in a confidential way

Operates via WhatsApp, making it accessible even in low-connectivity areas

The Bigger Vision

Ms. Flow is not just a tech tool, it’s a movement toward digital inclusion and menstrual dignity.

It represents how artificial intelligence can be human-centered, serving those who are often left behind by innovation.

Through this project, I aim to inspire more women to see technology not as something distant, but as something they can learn, create with, and use for good.

I believe that the future belongs to those who can blend empathy, innovation, and technology, and I’m passionate about helping women lead that future.

To every woman reading this:

You don’t have to be a coder to use technology to change lives.

All you need is an idea, a heart for impact, and the courage to start.

Together, let’s keep building a world where every girl and every woman can learn, create, and thrive.

Happy International Day of the Girl Child
