Voice of a Girl Artist

My Story: A Journey of Hope, Art, and Resilience

My name is Mashal Qarizada, a young artist from Kabul, Afghanistan. From the very first moment I held a paintbrush, I knew that art would be my voice—a voice to express dreams, pain, hope, and change.

Living in a society where many girls like me face endless obstacles, my passion for art became both my refuge and my weapon. Despite the dark clouds of oppression that shadowed our lives, especially with the cruel restrictions placed on girls’ education, I refused to let my dreams fade away.

When the universities were abruptly closed to girls, when doors to knowledge slammed shut, many felt lost and hopeless. But not me. I chose resistance—not with weapons, but with colors and creativity. I continued to learn in secret, to teach others in secret, turning my home into a hidden sanctuary of art and learning. Every brushstroke became an act of courage, every painting a silent protest against injustice.

My journey has not been easy. Threats, fears, and countless hardships have tried to silence me. Yet, my spirit remains unbroken because I believe that art has the power to heal wounds, open minds, and build bridges where walls have been raised.

My goal is to inspire every girl and boy in Afghanistan to hold on to their dreams and fight for their right to learn, to create, and to live freely. Through my art and my story, I want the world to see the strength, beauty, and resilience of Afghan girls. I want to be a beacon of hope that no matter how dark the night, the dawn will come—and with it, a brighter future.

This is not just my story; it is the story of countless voices that refuse to be silenced. Together, through courage and creativity, we will paint a new chapter of freedom and opportunity.

But this journey is full of challenges and difficulties. From the closure of universities to the pressures of the Taliban, who forbid girls from freely studying or learning art. Every time my art workshop is shut down or I face threats, my heart breaks—but I stand firm. I resist because I know this fight is not just mine; it is for all the girls who deserve to be seen, heard, and empowered.

Despite all these hardships, I am not discouraged. I believe every challenge is a new opportunity to stand strong and move forward. With every painting, with every word, I get closer to the day when art and education will be free for every girl in Afghanistan.

This is not just my story; it is the story of countless voices that refuse to be silenced. Together, through courage and creativity, we will paint a new chapter of freedom and opportunity.
